Second Chances
“The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: ‘Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.’ But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish…” -Jonah 1:1-3(NIV)
Let’s be honest—most of us have had a “run to Tarshish” moment. Maybe not literally buying a boat ticket to escape God, but spiritually, emotionally, or even physically avoiding what He’s clearly asked us to do.
That’s exactly what Jonah did. God told him to go to Nineveh. He didn’t ask. He didn’t suggest. He gave a direct call. But Jonah, for reasons we’re not fully told (though we can guess—fear, prejudice, rebellion), decided he knew better.
Tarshish was in the opposite direction. It wasn’t just a detour—it was a full-on escape plan.
But here’s the thing about running from God: you might get far, but you’ll never get free.
Jonah’s disobedience didn’t just affect him. The people on the boat got caught in the storm too. That’s what happens when we ignore God’s direction. Turmoil sets in—not just internally, but in the lives of those around us.
Still, the storm wasn’t just punishment—it was pursuit. God didn’t let Jonah go because He cared. He was calling Jonah back, not out of anger, but out of love. The storm was mercy dressed as chaos.
Maybe you’ve felt that storm too—when everything starts unraveling because you’re headed the wrong way. But what if that disruption is God calling you back, not pushing you away?
Here’s the good news: when we stop running, God doesn't slam the door shut. He forgives. He restores. He gives second chances—just like He did with Jonah. No matter how far you’ve gone or how long you’ve resisted, it's not too late to turn around. God’s grace is always for you to turn back to Him.
Reflection Question
What step might you need to take back toward God and what you know He wants you to do?
