Why Are You So Afraid?

Have you ever noticed how quickly fear can take over?

One unexpected phone call. A difficult diagnosis. A strained relationship. A financial setback. Suddenly our minds start racing with worst-case scenarios, and the storm feels bigger than we are.

The disciples knew exactly what that felt like.

As their boat was being battered by wind and waves, they woke Jesus with a desperate question: "Don't you care if we drown?" (Mark 4:38). It's easy to criticize them, but if we're honest, we've probably asked similar questions ourselves. God, do You see what's happening? Do You care?

After calming the storm, Jesus asked them a question: "Why are you so afraid?" Notice that Jesus didn't ask because He was angry. He asked because He wanted them to remember who was in the boat with them.

Sometimes we assume that following Jesus should protect us from life's storms. But Jesus never promised a trouble-free life. In fact, He said, "In this world you will have trouble" (John 16:33). What He does promise is His presence.

The storm may rock you, but it doesn't have to sink you.

Whatever storm you're facing today, remember this: God has not abandoned you. He is with you. He is for you. And even when you can't see it, He is working through your circumstances in ways you may not understand yet.

Take a moment today to look back on a storm God has already brought you through. The same Jesus who was faithful then is faithful now.
